a to z- a complete guide to “Oral Care”

Do you know the importance of “Oral Care”? It reflects in the statement below.

“Smile and the world smiles with you”.

Frankly telling you, that there is nothing in the world that can be more welcoming than a Smile, and when it holds so much value, then why not take care of that part, that will help you enhance it to its brightest.

Oral Health ( The health of your Mouth ) has the capability to reflect the complete well being of your body. No wonder when you are sick and you visit a doctor- the first thing he tells you is to open your mouth and show your tongue.

You know why? It is because of the tongue being directly connected with various internal organs of your body- like Kidney, Heart, Lungs, Spine etc through veins.

Hence maintaining a good Oral hygiene should definitely be a mandate and not a choice. We tend to avoid the Oral care as we feel that brushing our teeth in the morning suffices to the need of taking care of our mouth.

However, today even brushing of the teeth is not done in the right manner, which tends to devoid our teeth even of that care as well.

Moreover, your complete Mouth I.e – your tongue and gums along with your teeth, also need the same kind of attention as that of your face and hair. So, here we will learn to take care of our complete Oral health the right way.

First lets Discuss the problems of the mouth that a person faces day-to-day. They are listed below.

PROBLEMS

  • PLAQUE– It’s a kind of deposit on the teeth and gums that is sticky and the reason behind  bacteria multiplying in the mouth.
  • BAD BREADTH– A unpleasant odour that comes out your mouth while breathing
  • TOOTH DECAY- When the bacteria in the mouth work their way out to cause decay on the outer surface of your teeth
  • TOOTH CAVITY- It is a more vulnerable form of tooth decay wherein the bacteria in mouth it, harm the teeth to damage it to an extent that holes can be seen in them.
  • THE BLEEDING OF THE GUMS – Due to the deposit of plaque in the gums, they may get irritated , red ,swollen and in turn may bleed while brushing your teeth.
  • TOOTH SENSITIVITY- It’s a chilling experience that runs through your teeth when you eat/drink something hot, cold, sweet or something that is acidic in nature. That painful experience is called Tooth Sensitivity.

Though , these problems are a cause of our negligence and not taking care of our Oral Health seriously, but do you know there is a Good News – Just by doing things the right way, all of the above problems can be avoided and taken care of .

So, what exactly should be done to take care of our Mouth to have shinier teeth and Stronger Gums? Here are the Solutions.

solutions to the problems of oral care

• BRUSHING THE RIGHT WAY

Is there a wrong way of brushing also? LOL…

Well yes there is! While brushing of the teeth is not a big deal, but yes, brushing the wrong way can definitely lead to problems like- bleeding of the gums, cavities and bad breath.

So how do we brush the right way? Here we go:

  • Using a brush with soft bristles-  brushes with hard bristles damage the gum tissue.
  • The paste used should not be more than a pea-size- Anything more than that comes to no use and is wasted.
  • Brush your teeth in Slow Circular motions reaching to every nook and corner of your mouth- Horizontal or vertical movements of the brush do not serve the purpose.Further , rigorous movements of the brush, more than cleaning the teeth, tend to damage the enamel. So, be a bit slow and gentle on your teeth while brushing
  • Time Duration should at the least be 2 mins for brushing your teeth–  don’t cut it down short.
  • Your brush needs a replacement every three months – even if the bristles on your brush look as good as new, replace it every three months of its usage.

• CLEANING OF THE TONGE IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT

Some of us only brush our teeth and that’s it, but your complete mouth needs cleaning and your tongue and gums are also a very important part, that call for their maintenance.

Not cleaning the tongue may lead to Bad breadth, more plaque and bacteria.

For cleaning your tongue you can use a wet brush (a lot of brushes have started including a cleaner at the back of the brush as well)  or you can clean it with a scraper as well.

The more traditional way is to use a scraper as it tends to remove the bacteria in a much better way.

According to the books of Ayurveda, a scraper should be of metals like Copper, silver, gold, tin or brass. Any of them will work equally well.

What I personally use and recommend is a Copper Scraper as it is an effective Bacteria resistant metal which adds to the cleaning of the tongue more effectively.( MENTIONED BELOW)

Seriously, ditch your plastic scraper and do invest in a copper scraper for best results. Buy it once, and it will last for ages. Do give it a try.

• OIL PULLING

It is an ancient Indian technique which is a way to pull out toxins not only present in the mouth but also other parts of the body.

How do you do it

  • Every morning take a spoonful of oil in your mouth
  • Swish it inside the mouth for around 10-15 mins.
  • Make sure you cover every part of your mouth.
  • Spit the oil out.

If you think it’s a long process , then utilize that time by multitasking it with something else, like setting up your bag, setting up ingredients for your breakfast preparation, ironing clothes, etc.

How does it work- When we swish oil in the mouth, it creates an Osmotic pressure and since oil has properties that attract  dirt and micro-organisms towards itself, all the toxins are released out of the mouth along with the spitting of oil.

Try this Out , it has some really great benefits that will work wonders for your complete Oral Care solving almost all the problems related to the mouth.

Take it this wayALL ORAL PROBLEMS—ONE SOLUTION: OIL PULLINGSo, for Whiter Teeth, Pink Gums, Fresh Breadth and Pink Lips , try this method out.

Which Oil to Use- Any Cold- pressed oil can be used.  All of them work equally well.

For recommendations-

  • Use Sesame Oil –  If you are facing Digestion issues
  • Use Coconut Oil-  If your gums are bleeding
  • Use Mustard Oil-  If your tongue remains white because of the Mucus formation.
  • Use Sesame Oil mixed with 2-3 drops of Clove Oil- If you have cavities in your teeth.

• CHEWING OF THE FOOD PROPERLY

Well this can be the best exercise for your teeth to chew your food properly.

With our busy lifestyle, we tend to give very less time to eat our food, let alone chewing every bite of it in a proper way. However, I will highly recommend that don’t just fill in your stomach in the shortest span of time , rather devour each and every bite you take.

It’s not only good for your Oral Health, but does wonders to the overall health of your body.

If we talk about the mouth here. Chewing properly tends to increase the blood circulation of the gums thereby making the teeth stronger.

It is advised that you should chew every bite at least 32 times .

• RINSING THE MOUTH AFTER MEALS

This is one of the best habits that you can inculcate in your daily routine, if you would like to increase the life of your gums and teeth.

Every time after eating/ drinking something make it a habit to go and rinse your mouth “thoroughly”. We focus on the word “thoroughly” as rinsing the mouth doesn’t simply mean, just putting the water in the mouth and spitting it out in a hurry.

Make sure you spend at least 10-15 seconds swishing the water thoroughly in the mouth before spitting it out.

Try it out this way, after eating when you go to wash your hands, take a mouthful of water before putting soap in your hands, and carry both the procedures- swishing and cleaning of the hands simultaneously.

Believe me it works a great deal. You will see even the smallest of particles come out of your mouth. Which could have caused cavities in case they would have stayed in the mouth,

THINGS to AVOID-for your oral care

AVOID USING A TOXIC TOOTHPASTE

Really sorry to tell you that almost 85% to 90% of the fancy and leading toothpastes in the market that we have been using since our childhood and even encourage our children to use are Toxic in nature.

Ever looked at the ingredient list at the back of the pack of which your toothpaste is made? If not, do so from now on. You will notice that most of them are made of detergents, parabens, harsh cosmetic colors and other harmful chemicals.

“Sodium Lauryl Sulphate”(SLS) is one common chemical which is found in almost every toothpaste. If you very often face a problem of Mouth ulcers then one of the main reasons behind it could be the presence of this very chemical in your toothpaste.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is registered as an insecticide and is not even a recommendation to be used in cosmetics, leave aside using the same in a Toothpaste.

Having said that, a lot of companies still use it and we as consumers are ignorant of such facts. Regular usage of SLS deposits this chemical in the Lungs, Lever, Heart and Brain.

“Flouride”- The next toxic chemical that these big brands use is Fluoride. Now, why is fluoride considered Toxic , even though Dentists recommend it?

It’s because Fluoride comes with a fact that even 2.8 grams of its consumption can kill an Adult weighing 50 kgs. And we all know that Kids at times swallow the toothpaste as it tastes so fresh.

So, why take a risk- rather switch to a Herbal toothpaste (without the presence of SLS and Fluoride) or any other chemical for that matter,  so that, even if it is swallowed, it causes no harm.

VICCO VAJRADANTI IS THE NO. 1 RECOMMENDED TOOTHPASTE. The reasons are as follows:

  • It’s a complete Ayurvedic Toothpaste which does not include any chemicals, fluoride, artificial colors or any preservatives.
  • A perfect blend of 18 ayurvedic herbs and barks
  • Safe for even the Kids to use.
  • Economical ( Pocket Friendly) toothpaste.

OTHER TOOTHPASTES THAT ARE COMPARATIVELY SAFE AND I RECOMMEND ARE – “DABUR RED” AND PATANJALI’S  “DANT KANTI” TOOTH PASTE.

(RECOMMENDED TOOTHPASTES ARE MENTIONED BELOW)

• AVOID BRUSHING TEETH JUST AFTER HAVING YOUR MEALS

Some of us have this tendency of brushing our teeth right after having our meal (especially dinner) considering it to be a good practice. But unknowingly we are damaging our teeth at this point of time.

Actually, what happens is when we have our meal, the acid levels in the mouth tend to increase and brushing right after that can be harmful as, even a soft bristle brush can be abrasive on a mouth wherein the enamel is on a weaker front due to high acid levels.

The natural working of the body brings the PH back to normal level in the mouth with the help of Saliva, but it takes a duration of almost 30 minutes.

So the next time you brush- you know there should be a gap of at least 30 minutes after your meal.

• AVOID USING TOOTH PICKS TOO OFTEN

Some of us have a habit of cleaning our teeth with a tooth pick regularly. Frankly telling you it’s a really bad habit. The sooner you overcome this habit, the better it will be for you.

    • It increases the spaces between your teeth
    • It can damage the gums to an extent that they can even bleed
    • Imagine you were working on your teeth with a tooth pic and mistakenly in breaks. That can cause really severe damages to your complete mouth.
  • NAIL BITING
  • CHEWING YOUR PEN/PENCIL
  • OPENING OF BOTTLE CAPS ETC, AS IF YOUR MOUTH IS A TOOLBOX

Your mouth is a sensitive area, so do handle with care.

• AVOID BINGE EATING OF FAST FOOD TOO OFTEN

Over eating of fast food like sweets, chips, chocolates, burgers, noodles, french fries have the tendency to stick in the mouth, disturbing its PH, that lead to Oral problems.

These items with a high level of sugar and starch attract bacteria towards them  that further tend to cause cavities. So stay as far as you can from them.

FOOD ITEMS THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOUR TEETH

The food items that tend to actually strengthen your teeth are considered best for Oral Health are as follows:

  • Sugarcane
  • Walnuts
  • Raw Vegetables
  • Whole Fruits
  • Foods rich in Vitamin C like Lemon, Guava, Orange, Capsicum
  • Foods rich in Calcium Like Cheese, Paneer, Milk, Curd
  • Foods rich in Pro biotic like Curd mixed with Jaggery

Hence make it a point to include them in your diet for complete Care

PRO TIPS- TAKING ORAL CARE TO ANOTHER LEVEL

• CHEWING OF TWIGS (DATUNS)

This was a age-old technique of cleaning teeth that was used by our ancestors.

What are Datuns/Twigs?

They are small barks/Stems of trees like Neem, Babul, Mango, Peepal, Bael, Arjun, Permanganate.

What are its benefits?

These stems with anti-microbial properties. Chewing of these stems is considered as one of the best exercise which also comes with the following benefits:

  • Keeps your mouth away from infections
  • Say good-bye to mouth ulcers
  • Your teeth and gums stay strong
  • The alkalinity of the saliva in the mouth is maintained
  • A treatment for swollen and bleeding gums
  • Sense of taste is improvised
  • Tooth Decay is repaired
  • Gives you Whiter teeth

Coming to our busy Modern lifestyle, I understand its not possible to chew twigs on a daily basis, but doing it once in a while (may be once a week) is possible right. Go for it,  to reap its really miraculous  benefits.

Look around, you will definitely find a neem tea, somewhere clos to your house. Just pull out a stem and start shewing.

If not, then buy them online, they are very easily available. Here is the link- CLICK HERE.

START USING DANT MANJAN

Another Pro Tip that I would suggest is start using a Hebal Dant Manjan. It is made completely using traditional herbs that are a blessing to your teeth.

How do you use it?

  • Take some Dant Manjan on the palm of your left hand.
  • Pour 2-3 drops oil (sesame/mustard) on it
  • Mix it with the first finger of your right hand
  • Slowly massage your teeth and gums with the first finger of your right hand.
  • When you are done, wash your mouth.

What are its Benefits?

Actually the gums in your mouth are connected to the intestines through a network of veins. Hence:

  • The massaging of the teeth gives healthier and whiter teeth
  • The massaging of the gums increases the blood circulation and produces more enzymes, that help to improve the digestive system.

So, try cleaning your teeth with a  Herbal Dant Manjan at night before sleeping. You will notice that your digestion has increased with a much better Oral health .

Dant Manjans that I recommend

  • Dabur Lal Dant Manjan
  • Dant Manjan from Vicco.

ONE COMPlETELY NATURAL METHOD FOR TEETH WHITENING (REALLY WORKS)

You will need only one ingredient and that is “STRAWBERRIES”

How do you use it?

  • Take a strawberry, smash it with a spoon in a bowl and make a paste out of it.
  • When you brush, put a small amount of the strawberry paste along with the toothpaste on your toothbrush.
  • Now brush your teeth properly, and make sure that the paste reaches every nook and corner of your mouth.
  • Rinse your mouth.

Use this technique for just 5 days and you will see visible results of whiter teeth.

How does this work?

Actually strawberries contain a natural ingredient known a “Malic Acid” which helps in teeth whitening.

If you happen to go to a Dentist for Teeth whitening and are ready to spend a good amount of money on that as well, then it will be an eye-opener for you to know that even they use Malic Acid for whitening your teeth.

So why spend so much Money when it can easily be done at home.

Try it out, believe me It works,
